| Arbroath Open |
| Date | 29th May 10 | Venue | Seaton House |
Saturday past saw this event reach a wee milestone with the 5th playing of it, and the second at our new venue, Seaton Country Club.
Following last year’s record turnout, we were just short with 73 entries this time and with another quality field, including players from Arbroath, Dundee, Brechin plus some up-and-coming youth entries from Glasgow who play for the SPA’s Under-21 International team.
The prize pot remained the same as last year (£500) and allowed the payouts to reach down to the Quarter-Finals again.
The format reverted back to straight knockout beginning with Best of 5 frames but was reviewed on a time versus rounds basis and as it happened, we were able to increase the Last 16, Quarters and Semis up to Best of 7 frames.
Once again the table quality was very high and thanks must go to the SPA’s Ross McInnes who supplied them again.
The knockout format provided some 9 preliminary ties before the Last 64 started in earnest. In all, some 72 ties were played and a total of 292 frames of pool!
At the end of the day we saw some outstanding skills in the final between Dundee’s Jimmy Pollock and Kirkintilloch’s Ryan Davie (one of the youth entries), with Jimmy hitting high gear and winning 4-0.
Commiserations to Ryan who did little wrong in the final but could only watch as Jimmy pulled out several excellent finishes to keep Ryan off the table.
As a reward Jimmy claimed the trophy and top prize of £200.
For Ryan, he can console himself with the prize of £100.
Jimmy’s title winning credentials were backed up by the cold stats which showed he played 30 frames all day, winning 23 and losing only 7 and was the highest percentage in the field (77%).
En-route to the final he drew a succession of fellow Dundee players (Davy Penman, brother John Pollock, Steve Selvey and Tam Smith) before coming back from 2-0 down against Arbroath’s Mark McGlashan in the semi-final to win 4-2.
Beaten semi-finalists were Mark McGlashan and Colin Brown who got £50 for their efforts and the 4 Quarter-Finalists (Tam Smith, Lee Butler, Ian Webster and Gary Bruce) received £25 each.
Another stat of note was the fact that we have now had 5 different winners of this event in the 5 years of playing which makes it a true “open” with any one of a number of players capable of winning through on the day. In fact, 9 out of the 10 finalists are different, with only Josh Brannan of Dundee making two finals.
Finally a huge thank you to Ally and Elaine Ballingall, the new proprietors of Seaton Country Club for hosting the event and to their bar/kitchen staff. The feedback received from players continues to be excellent and ADPL hope the event will continue to growth, up to the magic 100 player mark.
Already looking forward to next year!
